The Board of Directors of Canadian Defence Lawyers invites you to a dinner honouring our 2023 Lee Samis Award recipient Stephen May on February 22, 2023.
We hope that you and your colleagues in the defence bar and the insurance community will join us to recognize Stephen’s achievements at an enjoyable and entertaining afternoon at the Gypsy Tea Room, 315 Water St, St. John’s, NL. Registration begins at 11:30, with lunch following at 12:00 (business attire).
The Lee Samis Award of Excellence was named for the founding President of CDL to recognize exceptional contributions and/or achievements by members of CDL:
- to the legal profession in general; or
- to jurisprudence in Canada on the law of insurance; or
- to law or development of the law of insurance in Canada; or
- a significant law-related benefit to CDL and/or the insurance industry.
Stephen May is a partner in the St. John’s office of Cox & Palmer. He was admitted to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 1988 after completing his education at the University of Ottawa. Stephen’s practice focuses on civil litigation with an emphasis on insurance. He has counseled government, aboriginal groups and corporations on various constitutional issues, including aboriginal land claims. Stephen has been consistently recognized in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a leading practitioner in Personal Injury and Commercial Insurance Litigation and recognized since 2012 in Benchmark Canada Guide as a leading practitioner in Civil Litigation and Insurance. He is listed as a leading practitioner since 2013 by the publication Best Lawyers in Canada in the areas of Insurance Law, Personal Injury Litigation and Aboriginal Law.
Stephen was awarded the Lee Samis Award of Excellence in 2023 for his contributions to the growth and development of the legal profession in Canada, long-term dedication as a mentor to students and young lawyers, and continued peer recognition.
